American Thanksgiving is something that I’ve long given up celebrating here in Canada. For the first few years I lived here, I tried to keep up with celebrating both Canadian and American holidays, but it got harder and harder to do. Firstly, it’s not a holiday here. Work, school, activities continue like it’s just any other day. We have our own Thanksgiving holiday here in October. Also, fitting in 3 turkey dinners in the space of 3 months is just way too much turkey for me.

So the holiday goes by with a quick mention to my family. Sometimes I have time to get a chicken or turkey breast to make, but more often, not. It’s just another day filled with activities and obligations.

So today is one of those days. Work, kid in school, other 2 kids are scattered far and wide, errands to do with a friend, a basketball game at dinnertime tonight. The friend and I decided to stop for a little lunch after completing our errands and the lucky restaurant patrons heard my shrieks when I squealed (very loudly) my delight at seeing a hot turkey sandwich, with dressing, with mashed potatoes, with gravy, with cranberry sauce on the menu.

Not as good as homemade…but there was no cooking, no cleanup. I felt like a kid getting surprised with their favourite treat. Now, I’m in search of some serendipitous pumpkin pie….

Happy Thanksgiving!
