no beatniks here

The cabled sweater that I started ages ago, let languish in my closet for another age, has been frogged and reborn as the Kikusui Cardigan. I did a quick sewing together and the Beatnik fit. I finished the front and back and was on the sleeves, but I just wasn’t inspired by it anymore. I loved making the cables, but wearing cables gives that chunky look that I wasn’t feeling for myself. So zip zip zip!

I looked very long and very hard to find the right pattern to go with this gorgeous MadTosh DK Merino. It’s a heavy merino and for me swatches up more like a worsted, which is just fine… more patterns to choose from!

Kikusui! I’m having a lot of fun making this! The pattern is well written and clear… I am, however, making a few modifications to the pattern as I go:

I added a pattern repeat to the collar so it will be more of a shawl collar when folded over, or it can be buttoned high on my neck when I need warmth.

I plan to make it more of a cropped length, possibly making the bottom ribbing much higher.

I’m not sure if I’m going to decrease at the waist for a fitted look or not. I may not need that if I’m going to shorten the sweater.

IMG_8794That’s the joy of making a top-down, seamless sweater. I can try it on at all stages and make changes as I go. As it is, I was this far already when I decided I wanted to collar a bit taller, so zip zipped it back and added the extra pattern repeat.

I can’t wait to get this one done and I have a feeling it will be a much-worn cardigan.

So I’ve been watching Netflix when I do my treadmill and Gilmore Girls is currently my obsession. So yesterday’s episode had me come to a screeching halt… this sweater!

I love this… I don’t know if anyone has written a pattern for it, but I think I have to have it. Who doesn’t love a good granny/striped sweater combo!!

  1. I love the color combo on the Gilmore Girls sweater– gorgeous! And good for you for frogging something you weren’t going to wear and making use of the yarn. 🙂

  2. The yarn is gorgeous, love hearing that you frogged it to make a sweater that you would wear. Makes sense.
And oh goodness, if you design that sweater from Gilmore Girls…I will be waiting in line to buy that pattern. It is so fantastic!
